Question by lady cottager: What to people think about the Mind/Body connection?
With much more of a prevalence of topics about diseases and cures spreading through media such as the internet and t.v., it seems that we are getting even more paranoid than necessary about our bodies…? Do you think a lot of symptons we may feel like we’re having are psychosomatic? There has been reported evidence that the mind plays a signifcant role in whether we are susceptible to certain things. Are practices like meditation and mind-over-matter helpful? Positive thinking? Just some ideas that have been splashing around in my head…

IMO, the mind is the cause and the body is the effect. Yet, most see their body as being in control and they are completely either ignorant or in denial about the mind.

edit – It only causes those deaths because those people are fearful of the world. I don’t have anything against traditional medicine. In fact, using medicine will often help the mind heal better.

Question by Daniel: Do you think educating the public about mental health issues would be a good thing to do?
I am studying community health in college, with a minor in health education. I am thinking about being a mental health advocate and a lobbyist someday. I also plan on educating the general public about many mental health issues, especially depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Do you think this is a good thing to do, in general? What good would come out of it?

Thanks a lot for your answers!

Great idea! so people won’t be afraid and get help. When people think of mental health..they think of crazy and no one wants to be known as being crazy..so stress that fact out. It would be good because you’ll help people regained their life in a type of a way.

Question by Ashish D: What do you think of the current education system ? What is the education strategy for your children ?
There are a huge number of obsolete methods in the education system starting from Kindergarten to Higher Education. I think this is the industry which is relatively slow to change. You would know what you have missed when you took your education. How would you ensure that your children do not miss that ? Would you consider alternative education or supplementary education or leave the kids to learn from the exploding media ? If alternative or supplementary education, what kind of and at what stage of their life ?

I think that the public education system is good if you have a slower child. The no child left behind works really hard to pass every child. What if you have an advanced child? A lot of them are not getting pushed to maximum abilities. There are positives and negatives to all. I have chosen to home school my children. I start them at age 2.

“A majority of Republicans have unfavorable views of Muslim and Arab Americans and don’t trust them with responsibilities in government, according to a new poll from the Arab American Institute…Although 60 percent of Republicans say they do not personally know any Arabs or Muslims, a plurality of Republicans polled by the institute expressed unfavorable views of Arab Americans and Muslim Americans (47 and 48 percent, respectively), while a majority expressed unfavorable views of Arabs and Muslims in general. Fifty percent of Republicans said that if a Muslim-American were to “obtain a position of influence in government” that their religion would “influence their decision making”; the reverse was true for Democrats, 50 percent of whom said religion wouldn’t influence a Muslim-American official’s decision-making. A slightly lower percentage of Republicans, 41 percent, said they think ethnicity would “influence” an Arab-American’s decision-making if he were to achieve a position of influence in government. Again, fifty-percent of Democrats say it would not…”.* Cenk Uygur and political comedian Jimmy Dore discuss on The Young Turks. *Read more here from Adam Serwer in Mother Jones: www.motherjones.com Watch – Atheist Q & A: www.youtube.com Support The Young Turks by Subscribing bit.ly Like Us on Facebook: www.fb.com Follow Us on Twitter: bit.ly Buy TYT Merch: theyoungturks.spreadshirt.com Find out how to watch The Young Turks on Current by clicking here: www.current.com

Think of your body as a car, and then realise that your body is the most complex vehicle on the planet. Some 50,000 million cells make up your body, forming your bones, muscles, nerves, skin, blood, and other organs and body tissues. None of these systems works in isolation – they all communicate through highly sophisticated pathways of information signaling.

As you consider your mind and body as one system rather than as two separate and unrelated parts, you notice how the two are inseparable. When your state of mind is calm, clear, and focused, your physical performance is likely to be at its best. Conversely, if your mind is confused and frazzled, then it’s likely that you will be off balance physically, experiencing symptoms from clumsiness to butterflies in your stomach.

Breakthroughs by neuroscientists over the last 30 years indicate that when an emotion is triggered, your physiology shifts even though you are not consciously aware of this. This shift sends a message back to the brain affecting virtually everything the brain does. So your performance, your ability to act with confidence, is inextricably linked with your physiology. Many mantras, prayers, yoga, and spiritual practices can have a beneficial effect on well being.

By practising disciplines such as yoga, meditation, Tai Chi, and martial arts, you can develop the discipline to calm your mind and centre your body for effective action. One of the quickest ways to get your physiology regulated is through changing your breathing patterns. Practise simple deep breathing exercises every day and focus your energy on your heart as you do so. When you find yourself in a situation of tension, breathe through the situation rather than reacting with anger or negative emotion. Breathing helps you conserve your reserves of energy.

Good luck and be sure to remember our tips given!
